PRESS RELEASE
Another Heartstart attendee and Trainee Heartstart Instructor Mr Luke Jordan has helped a lady who was having an epileptic seizure. Luke had learnt the skills at a Heartstart how to save a life course run by Herefordshire Heartstart.
Loraine Coleman, Co-ordinator/Project Manager for Herefordshire Heartstart said “Well done Luke for staying calm, taking control of the situation and preventing the lady from coming to further harm. We are always pleased to hear of anyone using the skills in a life threatening emergency. I am particularly pleased to hear that one of our own volunteer team has helped someone in need”.
Luke saw the lady collapse and have an epileptic fit in front of him. He checked that there wasn’t anything nearby that could harm her. He sent a bystander to call for the ambulance and waited with the lady until the seizure had ended.
When the fit had ended he checked that her airway wasn’t compromised. As she had fallen onto her side, he only needed to make some minor adjustments to put her fully into the recovery position. He checked that her airway and breathing were maintained and waited with her until the ambulance arrived.
The lady regained consciousness shortly after the seizure ended, she was very confused and scared, but Luke remained calm, held her hand and reassured her. The ambulance arrived and Luke was able to explain exactly what had happened.
Luke attended a public Heartstart course in 2015 and registered an interest in becoming a volunteer. Luke was interviewed, with the necessary DBS and reference checks being done. Once completed Luke joined as a volunteer, he undertook a volunteer induction, then attended Heartstart Instructor Training in August 2016. Luke has been helping at courses and delivering sections of the training, under the guidance of an experienced instructor since then.
